Some Fog But No Smoke While Paddling Around the Estuary Today

Tuesday September 15, 2020 Jenner CA.

Paddle day

I headed out to Jenner to kayak for the day around noon.

I put the boat in at the boat ramp and headed across the river and down towards the river’s mouth along Penny Island’s edge.river1

I  had to paddle by this great blue heron that gave out a big squawk as it flew into the  air. Fog bank over the ocean in the background.heron2

Lots of birds

There were a bunch of seagulls on the bottom end of Penny Island just resting. The brown pelicans were starting to come in off the ocean from this morning’s feeding.birds4

Some of the birds on the end of the island. Brown pelicans and seagulls.birds5

There were a couple of seals resting on the gravel in the water. Here’s one of them.seal6

Headed to the mouth

I was  headed down to the river’s open mouth just up ahead.mouth3

I went by these birds resting and taking it easy.birds7

Rough ocean

The ocean was fairly rough today. Ocean waves breaking on the rocks.pels9

More pelicans resting on the right side of the open mouth looking out towards the ocean.birds10

A wave breaks over the rocks.waves11

Harbor seals

For some reason the harbor seal population is down. There’s usually a couple hundred of them but since the fires there’s only been around 20 or 30 of them resting on the sand.seals12

One last look and I turned and headed on up the river just above Penny Island.mouth14

Napa time

I took  my time going up river to this spot just above the island. I was tired for some reason so pulled into shore where I could lay on the grass for a bit of a nap.boaat15

From here I paddled back to the boat ramp and loaded up the boat and went on home for the day.

I was still tired out when I got home so I napped a bit.

The rest of the day I chair hopped and puttered around the yard taking care of the chickens and just watching them do their thing.

Nice day.

Hi Bob – Brenda introduced me to your blog. Enjoying it. Couples of things, if I might. Seagulls is a bit of misnomer. They are gulls – many different ones you might see on the beach, flying overhead and along the river- especially Western, California, Heermanns, Herring at our cost herein Sonoma Co. As for the Harbor Seals (I did Seal Watch with Steward for about 15 yrs on Goat Rock Beach), the lesser numbers is really unrelated to the smoke. Every year around early September, their numbers go way down. We say they go on vacation. Ha Ha. Actually, they just disperse a bit more following fish availability/movements. They always come back as they have affinity for “their” natal colony.

I’m so surprised at the number of birds. I think I could sit there for hours and watch them.
