Paddling Jenner and the Monte Rio Boat Ramp Is a Mess

Wednesday March 8, 2017 Jenner CA.

No rain here today

It’s hard to beat the weather around here. Instead of wind and rain like I would have had up in Oregon, the sun was out and the wind was low as I put  my boat in the water at Jenner this morning.

Muddy and low tide

I paddled across the river to the island. The water was still muddy from the recent rains and it was low tide as a lot of shoreline was showing that only shows when it’s a real low tide.

Here I am paddling up along the side of Penny Island heading up river a bit.river

I paddled up to this old redwood log area and pulled in for a sit.logs

Eventually I worked my way up to this spot I call Muskrat nest beach as there are a lot of muskrat nests in the bushes here. There’s a lot of mud showing as the tide is out.muskrat

This grebe was fishing just in front of me, but I didn’t see it get anything.grebe

Drifting on the current

From there I turned my boat into the current and drifted down the river to the bottom end of Penny Island where there was a lot of gravel showing because of the low tide.

This is looking back up the river from the exposed lower end of Penny Island.island

With the muddy water there wasn’t much feeding going on today and only a few birds around that I went by.

These two seagulls were taking it easy on the gravel by the island.seagulls

With the low tide, I decided not to go down to the open river’s mouth as there was a lot of current down that way.

Eventually I worked my way back to the boat ramp at the visitor center and stopped here for awhile before going in for the day.ramp

Monte Rio boat ramp

On the way home I stopped at Monte Rio to check out the condition of the boat ramp there. The river water has been up high here for quite some time and deposited much mud and  debrie on the boat ramp.rioramp

As you can see much mud and debrie on the boat ramp, but the ducks don’t mind. There is way too much mud for me to shovel off, so I hope someone will come by with a backhoe eventually and clean it up, otherwise the fishermen are going to have a hard time using it as the water clears up for fishing soon.ducks

I went on home and did some unloading of my van and mostly just took it easy for the rest of the day.

And that was my day.

Sounds like a pleasant water ride. Glad you were able to get out with the ducks and the grebe.
